About Cacao
Brief History of Cacao:

Until recently it has been thought the use of cacao dated back some 3000 years to the Olmecs and Aztecs who lived around 1500 - 400 BC in Central America.
But the most recent research from 2018 shifts it’s origins 1,400 miles south and back in time by 1,500 years. Experts say seeds from the cacao tree were first used in present day Perú and Ecuador by members of the Mayo Chinchipe culture, some 5000 years ago.

Famously the Mayans enjoyed cacao drinks and believed cacao was discovered by the Gods and sent to them to enjoy. The Aztecs in particular revered the drink - they gave it to victorious warriors after battle, used it during religious rituals, and even used cacao beans as currency.
​
Cacao is the Spanish word for chcahuatl, which is what Aztecs called the beans.
​
Carl Linnaeus, the well-known Swedish botanist responsible for the classification system of life forms, gave cacao its official name of ‘Theobroma’ derived from the Greek words θεÏŒς (theos), meaning God, and βρῶμα (broma), meaning food - ‘Food of the Gods'.
Nowadays theobroma cacao is grown in tropical regions around the world. Most commercial chocolate comes from cacao grown in West Africa, but the rare Criollo varieties from the Americas are still considered the best.

The most ancient cacao
The civilization that built the temples in Perú and Ecuador is more than five thousand years old and would be the birthplace of cacao. Its remains are located in the binational Chinchipe-Marañón river basin.
A spiral temple was discovered in Montegrande, Perú and another in Palanda, Ecuador.

A nine-year investigation presents the ceremonial temple of Montegrande, as part of the discovery of a culture that developed on the border of Perú and Ecuador, and reveals that the oldest cacao in the world is found in this area.
The archaeologist believes that the temple has the shape of a curled serpent, an important symbol found in nearby sites. This temple proves that cacao was used for ritual and ceremonial purposes in ancient Perú.
The site is 5,000 years old, it dates back to 3,000 BC.
Research began in 2009, thanks to financial support from the Andean Community of Nations. Archaeological research in Peru was led by archaeologist Quirino Olivera.

Cacao, the Amazonian fruit had already been domesticated 5,500 years ago in the Chinchipe river basin, which runs between Ecuador and Perú reaching the Marañon river.
The temple is attributed to a culture that has been called Mayo-Chinchipe, civilizations developed in the Amazon jungle.
Palanda is in the Ecuadorian province of Zamora Chinchipe, was excavated by Francisco Valdez and Ceremonial vessels were found with traces of Cacao. The result of the carbon 14 dating offers a data that changes everything: the origin of the remains is 5,500 years ago, between 3500 and 3350 BC.
That culture gave cacao a ceremonial use and a mystical character 1,500 years before that happened in Mesoamerica.

"Archaeological evidence indicates that it would be found in the upper part of the binational Chinchipe-Marañon basin, evidence of 2,000 years before the Olmecs; that is, 5,500 years old. That makes it the oldest cacao in the world," says Olivera, who believes that this culture should be called Marañón, in honor of the most important course of the Amazon.

In more recent times, I have become deeply fascinated by the Ancient Egyptian Goddess, Hathor.
Like so many emanations of the archetypal force of Venus, Hathor too represented beauty, art, music, dancing, harmony, abundance, fertility, motherhood, sensuality, joy and pleasure. And in preparing for a special trip to Egypt with Sacred Planet in 2023, and in reading Dr. Alison M. Robert’s quartet of books on Hathor—including her most recent publication, Hathor’s Alchemy: The Ancient Egyptian Roots of the Hermetic Art—it was a joy to discover the alchemical power that this Ancient Primordial Goddess also represented in connection with the Cosmos and Kundalini, the Serpentine Creative Life-Force of the Universe.
In Ancient Egypt, Hathor was known as the Serpent-Eyed Goddess, and her priestesses were devoted to the activation of Kundalini Life Force in their bodies, which they understood to be their most sacred temples.

The Great Mother, Gaia, the Spiral, the Cosmic Serpent, the Dragon …
Throughout millennia, there has been a deep connection with this Serpentine Creative Life-Force of the Universe—the Dragon—in so many Ancient Civilizations.
In Ancient Egypt, this ancient kundalini force of creation was associated with Thoth (caduceus), as well as with Nut/Hathor/Isis.
The Incas and pre-Incas felt it through the spiral energy of Pachamama, aka. Gaia, Earth.
The Ancient Mayans knew it as their winged-serpent deity, Kukulcán.
In their Sacred Mythology, the Ancient Mayans taught that Kukulcán (known as Quetzalcoatl to the Ancient Aztecs) brought the Sacred Gift of Cacao to Humanity so that we may always be connected to the deepest creative truths of the Universe and of Ourselves … the macrocosm and the microcosm.
Theobroma cacao, the scientific name for the Sacred Tree of Cacao, literally translates to ‘food of the gods’.
